5 Tips to Help Your Roof Through the Winter Months

1 leaky Chimney:

Is your chimney leaking? Have you recently had your old fire taken out and replaced for a new gas one or have you got a chimney that’s no longer in use?

If so the problem could be with your old chimney pot still in place and not in use it will be leaving a hole in the chimney flue, where before hand your fire would be constantly drying it out.

The solution

Install a galvanized or pot rain caps. A rain cap will keep the bulk of the water out of the flue making sure it applies with gas safety though.

2 Keep Gutters Clean

One of the most common areas and causes for roof leaks are clogged gutters. Gutters that have not been cleaned can cause the water to build up during rain and over flow into the cavity or cause damp in your walls.

The solution

Clean and maintain your gutters. If you are unable to clean the gutter yourself , no problem RCS Roofing offer an annual gutter cleaning service so get in touch.

3 Flat Roofs re coat your flat roof with new solar paint

The covering of a flat roof will spend many years exposed to ultra violet light from the sun, this can lead to damage of the roof surface causing the oils to leak out of the bitchumen felt surface and to become brittle and crac. This can significantly affect the performance and durability of the roof.

The solution

Solar reflective paints can be painted on the surface of flat roofs to provide solar reflection. This helps protect the roof from the potentially damaging effect of the ultraviolet solar radiation (compatibility with bitumen based materials should be checked). However these paints are not very durable and reflectiveness deteriorates rapidly, therefore repainting is required every 3 to 5 years.

4 Checking for slipped slates tiles

From the roof space inside
if the inside of the roof is unlined, check for cracks showing daylight, as this will indicate areas needing closer inspection. Shine a torch on the timbers and check for water staining.

From ground level
outside, check the whole roof by inspecting at ground level. It is easy to spot a disjointed or slipped slate against the regular lines of slates.

  • Minor leaks can cause major damage
if you have a roof leak, you’d better fix it immediately, even if it doesn’t bother you much or you’re getting a new roof next year. Even over a short time, small leaks can lead to big problems, rooting roof rafters, destroyed insulation and damaged ceilings. If the homeowner had dealt with it right away, the damage and subsequent repairs would have been minimal.

5. Moss removal

We suggest only remove moss if its causing problems to your gutter or drains. The gutters can easily be blocked when moss either starts growing in them or is washed into them during heavy rains. So keep an eye on them from ground level and take appropriate action if you notice any problems.

We would not recommend the use of jet washer on the roof tiles as it could damage the brittle tiles if its necessary use a stiff brush or

Scrape the moss from the roof.

These are our 5 tips to get you through the winter months. Always contact a reputable roofing contractor for a proper assessment and never go on a roof with out proper safety methods in places first.
